What is a GST Calculator?
A GST Calculator is a simple online tool that helps you calculate the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on any product or service. In India, GST was introduced on July 1, 2017, to replace multiple indirect taxes like VAT, Service Tax, and Excise Duty. It is a single tax that is levied on the supply of goods and services.
Whether you are a business owner generating invoices, a student learning about taxes, or a consumer checking if you are being charged correctly, this calculator makes the math instant and error-free.
How to use this GST Calculator
- Select whether you want to Add GST (Exclusive) or Remove GST (Inclusive).
- Enter the amount in Rupees.
- Select the GST rate (5%, 12%, 18%, or 28%).
- Click Calculate GST.
- The tool will instantly show you the Base Amount, the GST Tax amount, and the Total Amount.
What is the difference between Inclusive and Exclusive GST?
1. GST Exclusive (Add GST)
When a price is "Exclusive of GST," it means the tax has not been added yet. You need to calculate the GST and add it to the base price.
Formula: GST Amount = (Original Cost × GST%) / 100
Example: A product costs Rs. 1,000 and GST is 18%.
GST = (1000 × 18) / 100 = Rs. 180.
Total Price = 1000 + 180 = Rs. 1,180.
2. GST Inclusive (Remove GST)
When a price is "Inclusive of GST," it means the tax is already included in the final price (like MRP on a packet). You need to reverse-calculate to find the base price and the tax amount.
Formula: GST Amount = Original Cost - [Original Cost × {100 / (100 + GST%)}]
Example: A product costs Rs. 1,180 (inclusive of 18% GST).
Base Price = 1180 / 1.18 = Rs. 1,000.
GST Amount = 1180 - 1000 = Rs. 180.
GST Tax Slabs in India
The GST Council of India has categorized goods and services into four main tax slabs:
| GST Rate | Common Items |
|---|---|
| 5% | Essential items like packaged food, economy flights, and small restaurants. |
| 12% | Butter, cheese, processed foods, business class flights. |
| 18% | Soaps, toothpaste, electronics, IT services, and most standard services. |
| 28% | Luxury items like cars, high-end electronics, and tobacco. |
Certain items like fresh fruits, vegetables, and life-saving drugs are exempt from GST (0%).
Types of GST in India
Depending on the transaction, GST is collected in three different ways:
- CGST (Central GST): Collected by the Central Government on intra-state sales (sales within the same state).
- SGST (State GST): Collected by the State Government on intra-state sales.
- IGST (Integrated GST): Collected by the Central Government on inter-state sales (sales between two different states) and imports.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Is GST the same as VAT?
No. VAT (Value Added Tax) was applied only to goods, not services. GST is a more comprehensive tax that applies to both goods and services across the entire country.
How do I calculate GST manually?
To add GST, multiply the price by the GST rate (e.g., price × 1.18 for 18%). To remove GST from an inclusive price, divide the price by 1 + the rate (e.g., price / 1.18 for 18%).
Who needs to register for GST?
In India, businesses with an annual turnover of more than Rs. 40 lakh (for goods) or Rs. 20 lakh (for services) are generally required to register for GST. There are special rates for North-Eastern states.
Is this GST calculator accurate?
Yes. It uses the exact mathematical formulas prescribed by the GST Council of India to calculate inclusive and exclusive taxes.
