What is a Typing Speed Test?
A typing speed test measures how fast and accurately you can type on a keyboard. The result is usually measured in Words Per Minute (WPM). In today's digital world, typing speed is a crucial skill. Whether you are a student, a programmer, a writer, or an office worker, being able to type fast saves hours of time every week.
In India, typing speed is a mandatory requirement for many government jobs like SSC (CHSL, CGL), Bank PO, LIC AAO, and court stenographers. The minimum requirement usually ranges from 30 to 40 WPM. This free online tool helps you practice and measure your speed instantly without installing any software.

How is Typing Speed (WPM) calculated?
WPM stands for Words Per Minute. A "word" is standardized as 5 keystrokes (including spaces). So, if you type 250 characters in 1 minute, your speed is 50 WPM.
The Formula used by this tool:
WPM = (Total Characters Typed / 5) / (Time in Minutes)
Accuracy Formula: Accuracy is calculated by dividing the number of correct characters typed by the total characters typed, multiplied by 100.
What is a good typing speed?
Typing speeds vary greatly depending on your experience and profession. Here is a general breakdown:
| WPM Speed | Category |
|---|---|
| 0 – 20 WPM | Beginner / Hunt-and-Peck |
| 20 – 40 WPM | Average user / Good for basic jobs |
| 40 – 60 WPM | Fast typist / Good for government exams |
| 60 – 80 WPM | Professional typist / Programmer |
| 80+ WPM | Expert / Competitive level |
Pro Tip: Most IT companies in India require a minimum of 30 WPM. Data entry jobs often require 50+ WPM.
Tips to improve your typing speed
- Do not look at the keyboard: Touch typing is the key. Learn the layout of the QWERTY keyboard and rely on muscle memory.
- Use the correct fingers: Place your fingers on the "Home Row" (ASDF for the left hand, JKL; for the right hand). Each finger is responsible for specific keys.
- Accuracy first, speed second: If you type fast but make many mistakes, you will waste time correcting them. Focus on 100% accuracy first; speed will naturally follow.
- Practice daily: Even 15 minutes of daily practice can double your typing speed in a few months.
- Keep your posture straight: Sit with your back straight and wrists slightly elevated to prevent fatigue.
Frequently asked questions
Does this tool save my results?
No. Everything runs in your browser. We do not store your typing test history or personal data.
Is this test based on Net WPM or Gross WPM?
This tool calculates Gross WPM (based on total characters typed). We also show you the Accuracy, which helps you understand your Net WPM (Gross WPM minus errors).
Why is my WPM 0 until I start typing?
The timer starts on your first keystroke. Before that, the speed is zero. This gives you time to get ready.
Can I use a mobile keyboard for this test?
Yes, but typing speeds on mobile phones are generally much lower than on physical keyboards. For an accurate test, use a laptop or desktop.
